About Vatnshellir Cave

Vatnshellir cave is an 8000 year old lava tube created during a volcanic eruption in a crater in the Purkhólar crater family. The cave is right next to the volcanic crater, which is just 500 meters away. As the molten lava rushed down the hill in a lava river it began to cool on the surface, creating a crust on top of the lava river. As the eruption stopped, all the lava from underneath this crust continued to drain out. Now it's possible to explore the insides of the lava field by joining us on a guided tour. Truly a beautiful natural formation.

 

The Tours

We offer 45 minute guided tours to Vatnshellir cave. The cave tour is relatively easy but participants need to be able to walk unsupported on uneven surfaces as well as be able to walk up and down the two spiral staircases found in the cave.

You need to dress warmly for the cave tour, since the temperature is just few degrees above freezing throughout the year. Hiking shoes/boots are recommended but sneakers are acceptable. We will not permit high heels or flat-bottom shoes including flip-flops for this activity. Gloves are recommended for your safety and comfort.

We offer this tour all year around, opening hours depend on the season.
To check availability, find the calendar on this page to see which hours are available on the date you select. We recommend booking online as soon as you've decided you want to go, tours regularly sell out and availability can be limited. If your plans change, we can change the time and date free of charge for you anytime up until 4 hours before departure.

Please show up at the cave at least 10 minutes before the tour to check in.

We supply helmets and flashlights/torches, headlamps are not allowed inside the cave.
Please keep in mind that the closest restrooms are at Malarrif Visitor Center.
